Yelahanka

Yelahanka is located 14 kilometers North of Bangalore and is governed by Bruhat Bangaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). It was originally planned as a satellite town of Bangalore in the 1970's but after the International Airport became operational, Yelahanka became an integral part of Bangalore. Yelhanka is famous for its lakes, particularly Kere and Puttenhalli. Puttenhalli Lake has officially been declared as a bird sanctuary with around 50 species of  birds. A number of corporates such as Federal-Mogul Goetze (India) Limited, Astra Zeneca Pharmaceuticals, Sri Pradhyumna Technologies, ABB, Hobel Flexibles and Elecon Measurements have set up their offices in Yelahanka. The largest facility of Mother Dairy in Karnataka is also housed in this area. Indian Air Force has its base in Yelahanka and the biennial international air show called Aero India is also organised here. This neighbourhood is also home to Rail Wheel Factory and is a base for Karnataka State Reserve Police, Border Security Force and Central Reserve Police Force. What most people don’t know about Yelahanka is that it was the origin of Bengaluru. Kempe Gowda, the man who founded Bengaluru, established Yelahanka as the city’s first capital. Only later did he expand the city down south, to KR Market and Basavangudi.

Yelahanka is well-connected to Bangalore city through a network of roads and NH 7, a 6-lane dual carriage highway which also connects Yelahanka with the International Airport. BMTC ( Metropolitan Transport Corporation) and KTC (Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation) serves the neighbourhood with its network of buses. State Highway 9 (Bangalore-Hindupur) also passes through Yelahanka further bisecting the suburb into Old Town and New Town. Railway Station is about 15 kilometres north of City Railway station. Metro is also expected to connect Cubbon Park with International Airport with a station at Yelahanka.
